Influence of Time and Severity of Summer Shoot Pruning on Flowering and Fruiting of Satsuma Mandarine

Abstract
Summer shoots of eight-year-old Satsuma mandarine (Citrus unshiu MAR.) trees were headed back on October 1, October 20 and March 15, 1972, at various levels of severity in order to investigate the effects of pruning. Flowers and fruits on the pruned shoot were significantly decreased by heading back, while the ratio of fruits to flowers was increased. Number of non-bearing flushes was increased to maximum by slight heading back, and the increment became dull in case of severe cutting off. It was supposed the existence of the most efficient pruning time can suppress the reproductive growth, but the exact time is to be further explored in relation to the physiological flower-bud formation period.
